Tips to Get a Jump Start on Spring Cleaning

Will the new year in full swing, you might be looking around at all the stuff you’ve accumulated over the holidays. And most of it, you either don’t need it or even want it anymore. That means it’s time to declutter. There’s a tidying trend going on right now because of the new Netflix special, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, who wrote the book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. We’ve compiled some of our favorite tips to help you cleanse your home of clutter.

Make a Plan!

Before beginning to tidy, set aside some time to plan and prioritize what areas of the house need the most work. Maybe it is the kitchen cabinets that always seem overcrowded or it could be that pile of mismatched shoes in the back of your closet! Whatever seems impossible, can always get done in smaller steps it just may take longer than you think!

Does it ‘Spark Joy’?

One of the famous taglines from the show, Marie Kondo’s method instructs you to ask yourself if an object sparks joy for you. If not, toss it. This is a great method to use when going through clothing, miscellaneous items, and even sentimental keepsakes. Asking yourself if the object sparks joy within you allows you to feel more appreciation for the things you decided to keep!

Simply Make Your Bed in the Mornings

Begin the day with this routine and you just might find yourself tidying up a few other areas of the house afterward! By beginning each morning with making your bed, you can allow yourself to get in the habit of making tidying meaningful. After a long day, coming home to a perfectly made bed is the best feeling and it will only take you a few extra minutes in the morning!

Focus on the Little Things

Since cleaning can seem overwhelming at times, begin with something small. After achieving a small task and creating a more welcoming space, you’ll feel more confident to move onto the next task. Invite the whole family in on the tidy spree with a quick 10 minute clean up. Set a timer and allow everyone to clean, fold, or organize whatever they see around them! This is such a great way to get everyone involved and left with a feeling of accomplishment when it’s all done.

By following these simple tips, there’s nothing you won’t be able to organize in 2019! We see a bright, clean, StoneGate home in your future!
